There was a time when I was interested in this phone, but not anymore. An S60 flip is tempting, but with the N76 coming out, I think I’d rather wait for it.

I took a look at the AWS spectrum auction that just took place in last couple of months in the USA. The frequencies auctioned off were in the range of 1.7GHz for uplink and 2.1Ghz for downlink. Now, what’s interesting is that Cingular has managed to roll out its very own 3G deployment (in the form of HSDPA for packet data only) in the 850MHz/1900MHz band using its already existing spectrum. Now that cingular has acquired spectrum in the 2.1GHz range why can it not deploy 3G using the 1900/2100 MHz combination like Europe. I mean they would ONLY have to re-plan their entire 2G network to 850MHz and spend like a billion or so dollars :D. But in all fairness, it is a possibility that cingular should consider.

Cingular announced the availability of the Samsung SGH-i607 aka Blackjack. This Windows Mobile 5.0 based, HSDPA compatible device is Cingular’s answer to the Motorola Q and the T-Mobile Dash. The quad-band phone sports the usual 1.3MP camera and bluetooth (with A2DP support, I might add) and a microSD expansion slot. With dimensions of 113mm x 59mm x 12mm, the device is quite thin (2mm thinner than the Nokia E61). It does not possess wi-fi functionality, which is a big minus in my opinion, since I use wi-fi a lot.

The phone will be Cingular exclusive, and is expected to launch in mid-November for $199 with a 2yr contract and unlimited data plan.
