Exploring my symbotic relationship with S60

Archive for the ‘apps’ Category

Adding to my list of yahoo pipes, I’ve created a new rss feed for the Mobile-Review English site:

The feed that I’ve generated will list all the news listed on the mobile-review english front page in rss format.

• Improving the Nokia Browser

I’m a big fan and a religious user of the new Nokia browser. Its really great at accurately rendering HTML/XHTML web pages (although RAM consumption could be lower :D). However, I do think that there is still a lot of scope for improvement to get it on par with PC - based browsers. The following is a (short) list of some features that I feel should be a part of the Nokia browser.

1. Enable T9 when typing in a url in the Bookmarks menu: I absolutely hate it when I have to enter a long address by typing it in manually.
2. A set of combo shortcuts (like Ctrl + Enter in Windows) to add commonly used suffixes to urls.
3. The ability to move storage of temporary files to MMC: How many times has it happened that you wanted to download a 5mb audio file through the web page, but couldn’t, as you didn’t have enough free phone memory (even though your mmc might have 1GB free). If it were possible to shift the storage to mmc (like how its possible for Messaging), it’d be great!
4. Storing passwords: I access my university’s wi-fi through the phone all the time and entering my 14 character long password to establish a new session (about 4 times a day, on average) is quite irritating. The fact that I have a long name and the N91’s keypad doesn’t really help. (Seems like this feature is going to be added in FP1!!)

• Nokia Video Center Preview

A very interesting thing to note in the preview, the person said that only those videos compatible with your device are listed in the Video Center. So does that mean that only certain specific youtube videos are going to be viewable on the device? There was no mention of a search feature within the app that would allow users to search and download specific videos. If that’s the case, it sounds more like a youtube videocast, rather than full-fledged youtube support.

• Get your Nokia Press news via RSS

Nokia does not have RSS feeds for their press releases (and most of their events ;)) to which we can subscribe. Well, I decided to do something about it. So I made my own Nokia Press RSS feed :D.

I used an online service called as FeedYes in order to create a feed from the Nokia Press Page. Then I used Yahoo pipes to filter out the unwanted stuff leaving only the Press releases in the feed.

I’ve published this feed, so everyone can subscribe to it.

Link to feed

I’m trying to create more. Another one that I’ve created is a feed for techeblog’s cell phones category (since techeblog has a single feed, no individual feeds per category). I know a lot of fellow bloggers like Stefan from Ring Nokia refer to techeblog’s article for cell phones.
The feed can be found here.

This is my first attempt at all of this. Hope you guys like it. :)

Finding 3gp and sis/six files on Google

For searching directories of 3gp or sis/sisx files:

Type the following in google:

-inurl:htm -inurl:html -inurl:asp intitle:”index of” 3gp (for video files)
-inurl:htm -inurl:html -inurl:asp intitle:”index of” sis or sisx or symbian (for folders named symbian/sis/sisx)
Alternatively, you can search for specific files by:
“filetype:sis inurl:sis” or “filetype:sisx inurl:sisx” for sis and sisx files.
“filetype:3gp inurl:3gp” for 3gp files.
If you want to find some specific files, such as the adobe acrobat reader, you can add the keyword to the search term.

Nice hacks, but its kind of more fun than useful.
Let’s see if someone can tweak them even further to yield better results. :D
